Wanderer Returns
Whaling Bark Wanderer was built in Mettapoisett 1878, being of 303 tons and a length of 116 feet. Wanderer operated from the famous old whaling port of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Depicted here returning home after a long voyage to the Arctic, some voyages lasted for up to four years not returning until the ship’s casks were full of valuable whale oil.
Wanderer was the last square rigged whale ship to sail from New Bedford, that was on August 25 1924, the next day she was wrecked on Cuttyhunk Island during a northeasterly gale.
