Wanderer among the floes
Whaling Bark Wanderer was built in Mettapoisett 1878, being of 303 tons and a length of 116 feet. Wanderer operated from the famous old whaling port of New Bedford, Massachusetts.
This painting shows Wanderer moored fast to a floe, a whale carcass lies ready to be positioned for the process of cutting in. Meanwhile, blubber from a previous catch is being boiled in the Tryworks, the reeking smoke leaving the rigging, sails and spars covered with a greasy soot, this continues day and night until the work is completed.
